Tree Removal

If a tree is located on your property and not located on a lot larger than 24,000 feet, in a critical area, or a shoreline then a permit is not always required. Please email the Planning Division to determine if the property is within a critical area.

Street trees (typically located between the sidewalk & street) will require a permit and may be approved only if the tree is diseased, dangerous, or causing damage. The City does not approve removal for future damage. If your tree is causing damage to your sidewalk or you need to trim your street tree which would result in working in the right-of-way, please fill out a General Encroachment permit.

A tree removal permit is not required to remove a tree if the property is not within a critical area and the property cannot be divided.

Measure the diameter of each tree at 4.5 feet above the ground. This is called the diameter at breast height (DBH) and it is measured in inches.

To apply for the permit you will need to do the following:

  1. Fill out both permits.
  2. Show the outline of your property, and the approximate location of your house, driveway, street and any other improvements.
  3. Indicate the approximate size and species of tree(s) to be removed and provide a reason for removal.

There is a $35 general encroachment permit fee. There is no fee for the tree removal permit.

Yes. Trees to be planted must meet the following size specifications.

  • Evergreen: 4 foot tall minimum
  • Deciduous: 
    • 2.0 inch calliper, branched
    • 2.0 inch DBH
    • Deciduous trees in planter strips to be a minimum 2" caliper and on approved street tree list.
