FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

 

General Information

1. What is happening at the Camas Library?

The Camas Library is renovating the Children's Library to create a more welcoming, engaging, and flexible space for children and families. The project includes spaces designed to support early literacy, movement-based learning, and hands-on exploration. In addition, there will be a new and improved display area for our Kid Librarians!

Other improvements include the Adult Nonfiction Room (new carpeting) and the Holds Pick-Up Area (improved lighting). 

 

2. When will construction begin? 

Construction is scheduled to begin on Monday, June 29, 2026.

 

3. How long will the renovation last? 

Construction is expected to continue through the summer and into the fall. We will share updates on our social media channels and in the Library as the project progresses. 

 

4. Will the Library close during construction?

No. The Camas Library will remain open throughout renovation, and all core services will continue.

 

Accessing Materials

1. Will I still be able to check out books?

Absolutely! All Library materials will remain available during construction, although some may be located in temporary areas. If you can't find something, please ask. 

 

2. Where will children's books be located? 

Most children's materials will remain available on the Library's main floor. Some overflow items will be stored in our basement collection area. 

 

3. What if I can't find the item I'm looking for? 

Please ask us! Staff are happy to retrieve items from the basement or help you place a hold. 

 

4. Will adult collections be affected? 

Some of the adult nonfiction collection will be temporarily relocated to the basement. Patrons may browse these materials online through our catalog and either place them on hold or request staff assistance in retrieving them. 

 

Borrow Big

1. What is "Borrow Big"?

Borrow Big is our community-wide effort to help make room for the renovation while keeping books in the hands of readers. We're encouraging library patrons to check out as many items as they'll use and enjoy this summer. 

 

2. How many items may I check out?

Each Library card may check out up to 150 items at one time.

 

3. How long can I keep my Borrow Big items?

For this special summer initiative, Borrow Big materials checked out June-September will have a return date of October 1, giving families up to 12 weeks to enjoy them. 

 

Programs & Services

1. Will Summer Reading still happen?

Yes! Summer Reading will continue exactly as planned. In fact, we've broken participation records in recent years, and we're excited to welcome readers of all ages again this summer. 

 

2. Will storytimes continue?

You bet! Storytimes will take place both at the Library and in parks throughout Camas.

 

3. Will Library programs be canceled? 

Very few changes are expected. Programs normally held in the Totem Pole Room may be relocated during construction.

 

4. Will community groups still be able to use the meeting rooms?

Yes. Community Room reservations and events will continue as scheduled. 

 

About the Renovation

1. Why is the Children's Library being renovated?

The Children's Library serves children from birth through age 12 in a relatively small footprint of the entire building. The renovation will create dedicated spaces that better support the different ways children learn, play, and grow.

 

2. Why now?

This project has been years in the making. Community members consistently identified improvements to the Children's Library as a priority, and City Council supporting moving the project forward. 

 

3. What will the renovated Children's Library include?

The new Children's Library will feature spaces designed for:

  • Early literacy and language-rich experiences
  • Movement-based learning and discovery
  • Project-based learning and creativity

Future activities may include STEM programs, homework labs, hands-on challenges, play meet-ups, and expanded opportunities for exploration and community connections.

 

4. What are you hoping families gain from this renovation?

We hope the Children's Library becomes an even stronger gathering place for Camas families, a place where children discover a love of learning and caregivers build friendships and connect.

 

Funding

1. How much does this phase of the project cost?

The interior improvements are Phase 1 in a two-phased, $2.1 million project. The project cost for Phase 1 is $1.3 million.

 

2. How is the project being funded? 

The project has been funded through several sources, which include: 

  • City of Camas General Fund
  • Washington State Department of Commerce Grant (Phase 2 only)
  • Friends & Foundation of the Camas Library
  • Grants from various community organizations
  • Donations from our generous community!

 

3. Are taxpayer dollars being used?

Yes. This project represents an investment in community infrastructure that will serve Camas families for years to come.

2. What will Phase 2 look like?

Phase 2 will focus on exterior improvements with an emphasis on accessibility and safety. The courtyard will also receive a refresh.
