Reading Challenges
January 7, 2022 - Happy New Year, everyone! Is it any surprise What’s the Buzz is starting 2022 with a blog post about New Year’s resolutions and books?
Reading challenges can be a fun twist on your yearly reading goal or offer some inspiration if you’ve been in a reading rut recently. They’re great for all ages and reading interests.
Here are several reading challenge prompts:
- Alphabet - Read a book starting with each letter of the alphabet.
- Decade – Read books from different decades.
- Genre – Pick several genres and read a book from each category.
- Grab Bag – Ask friends and family for recommendations and read their suggestions.
- Literary awards – Pick a literary award and read all of the books on the long and short lists.
- Movie Adaptations – Read books that have been turned into movies.
- New formats – Read (or listen) to books in formats you don’t typically consume.
- Place-based – Read books set in places you would like to visit, have visited, or have a connection with.
- Rainbow – Read a book with a cover for each color in the rainbow.

- The 52 Book Club’s 2022 Reading Challenge and the Reading Women Challenge have devoted #bookstagram fans and have archived past challenges on their websites. The Reading Women Challenge has since disbanded but I still highly recommend taking a look at their lists!
- “The 2022 Master List of Reading Challenges” by girlxoxo: A compilation of more than over 50 reading challenges.
- “Reading Challenges” by Gifted Guru: This list of reading challenges includes the ever-popular PopSugar list as well as the Rory Gilmore challenge which includes all 300+ books referenced in Gilmore Girls.
- “Revamp Your Bookshelves: Monthly Reading Challenges for Kids.” by the Brightly Editors: These monthly reading challenges are geared towards young readers.
