PNW Black History
September 25, 2020 - As we continue our “Read for Change” series, patrons may be interested in digging deeper into Black History in the Pacific Northwest. A greater understanding of this history will help us work towards racial equity in the present. Also, you don’t have to wait until February to learn about Black History! Anytime is a good time to discover authors and resources that will lead to a greater understanding.
In this post I am sharing a few resources about Black History in the Pacific Northwest.
- Northwest African American Museum. The mission statement for this Seattle museum states “Present and preserve the connections between the Pacific Northwest and people of African descent; and to investigate and celebrate Black experiences in America through exhibitions, programs, and events.”
- Seattle Civil Rights and Labor History Project. This site provides resources for exploring the civil rights activism of African-Americans in the Pacific Northwest.
- The Center for the Study of the Pacific Northwest posted a lesson titled “African-Americans in the Modern Northwest.”
- BlackPast.org is an incredible online reference center that provides a wealth of materials on African-American history. Dig in.
- The Black Heritage Society of Washington State. This organization’s mission is “Preserving, collecting, and sharing the history of African-Americans in Washington State.”
- “Black Roots in the Lower Columbia River Basin.” An article from The Columbian that covers the Winter Chautauqua event.
