Filipino American History Month

Filipino American History Month

October 21, 2022 -Did you know Filipino American History Month (FAHM) is celebrated in October to commemorate the first recorded presence of Filipinos on the North American continent? Conscripted Filipino sailors landed in what is now known as Morro Bay, California, aboard the Spanish galleon Nuestra Senora de Esperanza, on October 18, 1587. The Filipino American National Historical Society (Seattle, WA) was instrumental in the recognition of FAHM.  The historical society’s Facebook page, Filipino American History Month, features historical stories about, and current achievements of, Filipino Americans.

In my quest to learn more about FAHM, I came across the Filipino American International Book Festival held every two years at the San Francisco Public Library. This year, the book festival was held October 15-16 and many of the attending authors have books that can be found in our catalog.
