The City of Camas is working hard to preserve green spaces around town and ensure that trees affected by development on private land (as well as projects on public land) are replanted nearby or recovered through payment into our tree fund, established last September as part of a new tree ordinance.

Especially exciting is the progress being made to reach nearly 1000 acres of dedicated green space around Lacamas Lake. These conservation efforts not only honor Camas’s forested land and natural spaces, but also incorporate seven miles of connected multiuse public trails and recreational areas through which residents and guests can take in all the area has to offer.

BACKGROUND
On August 6, 2018, several citizens took part in our public Urban Tree Program hearing many more submitted comments. Based on that input, the work of committee volunteers, and feedback from staff, the City’s new tree ordinance was drafted. On September 4, 2018, the Ordinance and Resolution were adopted.
The new program accomplished the following:

1. Created a street tree permit, which will require that any trees that are removed, will need to be replaced
2. Provided for consistent penalties for illegal removal of park and public trees, and increase those penalties
3. Created a new system for protection of trees with new developments that is based on a tree unit calculation and prioritizes the types of trees for preservation
4. Created a City Tree Fund. Any fees and fines collected will be placed in the fund and used to support the City’s urban forest
